Waqar Younis wants ‘forgiveness’ for WT20 debacle
‘Hurt’ Waqar Younis wants ‘forgiveness’ for WT20 debacle
- March 30, 2016
LAHORE: Pakistan cricket head coach Waqar Younis Tuesday
begged forgiveness from the nation for the World Twenty20 debacle in
India and said he was prepared to resign for the serious mess in
Pakistan cricket. The 2009 champions have been widely blasted by fans
following a lacklustre performance with just one victory against lowly
ranked Bangladesh and big losses to India, New Zealand and Australia.
Skipper Shahid Afridi and his men were knocked out of the World Twenty20
at the group stage. Team Pakistan members were jeered on their return
this weekend by huge crowds at Lahore airport, who chanted “Shame!
Shame!”
Addressing a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium here, Waqar said: “I place my hands together and beg forgiveness from the nation.” Waqar admitted that the team could not live up to the expectations and a lot of criticism was being made on the team, its captain, team management as well as the selection committee and there was a common thought to sack them. “If we do so would it help to correct the system,” he questioned. The head coach said the external cosmetic surgery would not serve any purpose and called for coming up with a solution of the current crisis to safeguard the interest of Pakistan cricket.
This is Waqar’s second stint as coach, after he had guided the side in 2010-11. He had parted ways with the team in 2011 due to a rift with captain Afridi. With Waqar and Misbahul Haq at the helm, Pakistan had climbed to No. 2 in the ICC Test Rankings, and are currently at No. 4. Their position in the limited-overs rankings, however, has been weak. They are currently ranked No. 8 among ODI sides and No. 7 in the T20I format. The side’s last win in a T20I series came in September 2015 against Zimbabwe, and they subsequently lost series to England and New Zealand in the lead-up to the Asia Cup and the World T20. The fast-bowling legend, whose contract is due to expire in May this year, added that he was prepared to stand down if it was in the team’s best interest, but stopped short of offering his resignation. “If my leaving makes things better, then I would do it without delay,” he said. Waqar refrained from blaming individuals, and instead urged the PCB to address the deeper issues in the system. “But we need to dig deep to recognise and find heroes. We don’t need stars, we need heroes,” Waqar maintained.
The Pakistan squad included the likes of Ahmad Shahzad, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik and skipper Shahid Afridi. The four players are the ‘stars’ in Pakistan’s current line up but it wasn’t clear who Waqar was pointing at in his statement amid rumours of factions within the team. “Pakistan cricket is facing numerous problems at present and many of those can’t be spoken about in public. If those problems are disclosed in front of the people, it will bring a bad name to Pakistan. It’ll be better to discuss it all in the PCB boardroom.” Waqar maintained that things were not right and everyone knew that. “We cannot close our eyes to it. We need to remove politics from cricket. I will try my best to present all the findings and suggestions to the probe committee. We are trying that the in-house problems should be solved inside. It is high time that we make things right.”
Sharjeel Khan was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer with 112 runs in 4 matches while Shehzad, who was recalled to the team at the last minute, scored up 108 runs in as many World T20 outings. Afridi and veteran all-rounder Malik scored less than 100 runs in 4 matches and failed to take responsibility when the side needed it. ‘Boom Boom’ was off colour with the ball as well as his side failed to make their presence felt at the world event. Waqar also echoed calls made last week for a revamp of the country’s domestic structure, and added that the malaise stemmed from Pakistan’s lack of home games since 2009 militant attacks on the Sri Lankan team. “When there is no cricket at home then the foundation will for sure become weak,” he said.
To a question, Waqar said the team performed badly and the element of grouping did not exist in it. “It is the duty of the PCB to determine and conclude who are responsible for the setback in India.” He was of the view that the fact finding committee of the PCB would unearth the truth which would determine who let the team down. “I will be putting up my recommendations with my honesty and we have to find a solution by looking into the matter.” Waqar has submitted his report of the tournament to the PCB chairman and it is learnt that the report covers a wide range of issues, from selection matters to the players’ capacities and the issues he has faced in last two years.

Hundreds arrested in combing operations across Punjab
- March 30, 2016
Under the directions of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, Pakistan Army, Rangers and intelligence agencies conducted operations in Faisalabad, Multan and various areas of south Punjab and arrested 713 suspected persons including three facilitators of Gulshan Iqbal Park suicide terrorist attack, 60 foreigners, 117 Afghans and workers of proscribed outfits during the last two days. On a tip-off, Rangers personnel along with intelligence agencies conducted a search operation in Rajgarh and arrested three suspected persons, who were then shifted to undisclosed locations for investigations.
According to sources, the detainees were arrested for facilitating the Lahore attack. The Rangers seized important documents from them. Meanwhile, six workers of proscribed terrorist outfits were apprehended during a search operation in Hassanabdal, 34 suspects were arrested in Rahim Yar Khan and 18 in Kasur. Rangers and intelligence agencies recovered weapons and ammunition from the suspects. Army personnel accompanied by Rangers and intelligence agencies arrested more than 200 suspected persons in Gujranwala, more than 80 in Faisalabad, 250 including 60 foreigners in Sialkot, several alleged terrorists in Mainwali during search operations across Punjab.
The security forces have arrested 117 Afghans and 63 suspected persons whose named are placed in Forth Schedule list. Police arrested 10 suspected persons in Bhakkar. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on Tuesday asserted that there was no organised terrorist network or no-go area in Punjab. Speaking at a press conference, he said the operation against terrorists launched in the province was a national operation. He said an operation against terrorism was already underway across the province, but now it was being carried out in a more organised way.
The minister said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had talked about capacity-building of intelligence agencies. He said that people should also play their role in providing information about suspects and terrorists’ activities in their surrounding areas. He said there was no hideout of terrorists in Punjab, adding that the provincial government was fully implementing the National Action Plan. Sanaullah said police, Elite Force, Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Rangers and Pakistan Army had conducted several joint intelligence-based operations in Punjab since the launch of the operation Zarb-e-Azb.
He said the police had carried out 56 operations in Punjab, whereas the CTD had conducted 16 operations after Gulshan-e-Iqbal park blast. He said the police with the support of intelligence agencies had launched 88 operations in which about 5,221 suspects had been interrogated and 5,005 released after verification and 216 were still under investigation. The minister said that the response time of rescue and police teams was appreciable as they quickly carried out a rescue operation and shifted the injured to various hospitals.
Government puts off operation to clear D-Chowk until today: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
Government puts off operation to clear D-Chowk until today
- March 30, 2016
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced
on Tuesday that the government will clear the D-Chowk of protesters on
Wednesday (today) “at any cost”, if they don’t disperse by themselves in
the night.
If the protest doesn’t end in the next one hour, “then instead of doing anything in the night we will clear the Red Zone in the morning”, Nisar said on Tuesday. The Islamabad district administration had issued pro-Mumtaz Qadri protesters gathered outside Parliament House a two-hour notice to disperse. The legal notice was issued to the religious leaders gathered at D-Chowk by the district magistrate. It accused them of attempting “to frustrate the government’s drive against terrorism”.
Around 700 protesters continued to protest in Islamabad’s Red Zone on Tuesday, police official Mohammad Kashif confirmed, despite warnings from the government, bringing the most sensitive parts of the capital to a standstill. “An operation will be conducted if the participants of dharna (sit-in) do not disperse in a few hours,” a security official said. “Leaders of the protesters have been given a notice in this regard,” he said, adding that they had been given two hours to disperse. If they do not, he said, “law enforcement agencies shall take action” by removing them.
Heavy contingents of FC, Rangers and Islamabad police have surrounded the Red Zone. However, reports on local media indicate last-minute negotiations are underway between government representatives and leaders of religious parties to reach an amicable solution. A police source said more than 5,000 security forces would be deployed, including the paramilitary Rangers and Frontier Corps with reinforcements from the Punjab Police. Army troops are already standing guard at government buildings near the protest site.
A rally organised by Sunni Tehreek (ST) saw more than 10,000 charged protesters enter the city on Sunday, damaging buildings and setting fire to the metro station, containers and buses. A crowd consisting of around at least 25,000 people had attended the chehlum of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer’s killer, Mumtaz Qadri, in Rawalpindi’s Liaquatbagh earlier that day. Mumtaz Qadri, an Elite Force commando, was executed at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on February 29. Qadri shot Taseer 28 times in broad daylight in Islamabad’s Kohsar Market on January 4, 2011.
Qadri said he killed Taseer over what he called the politician’s vocal opposition to blasphemy laws of the country. He was sentenced to death for assassinating Taseer on October 1 the same year. The protesters, while staging a sit-in in front of parliament, issued a list of 10 demands under the banner of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool (PBUH). Their demands include the unconditional release of all Sunni clerics and leaders booked on various charges, including terrorism and murder; the recognition of Mumtaz Qadri as a martyr and the conversion of his Adiala Jail cell into a national heritage site.

Govt must take all possible steps to take up capture at international forums: ISPR : RAW agent spills the beans
March 30, 2016
ISLAMABAD: The arrested agent of Research and Analysis Wing
(RAW), who is a serving Indian Navy officer, has confessed to his
involvement in sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan, especially in
Balochistan province and the port city of Karachi, according to a
six-minute ‘voluntary’ confessional video statement of Kulbhushan Yadav
aired at a joint press briefing by Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid
and Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt Gen Asim
Saleem Bajwa.
It is for the first time that Pakistan has arrested a serving officer of the Indian security forces working for RAW inside its territory. In past, Pakistan did arrest many an operative of RAW but never ever a serving officer of the rank of a lieutenant colonel has been nabbed. Areas of Gwadar, Pasni, Jevani and other places in Balochistan were the target of the agent who wanted to sabotage future projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) through subversive activities.
The DG ISPR said the arrested agent would lure Baloch students to use them in anti-national and destabilising activities by offering them a lot of money. He said the agent was either involved or had information about many terror acts, including Mehran Base attack, bomb blast in Gwadar, SSP Aslam Chauhadry’s murder, Tiger Force’s constitution and Baloch nationalists’ terrorist activities. “He was given the task to attack a five-star hotel in Gwadar where Chinese national working on the seaport use to stay,” he said.
Terming the rare capture of a serving Indian Navy officer working as RAW agent a big success, he said the arrest was a solid proof of Indian hand in sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan. “Yadav is a serving Indian naval officer and we have irrefutable evidence to prove it,” he said and added that Yadav, who pretended to be a converted Muslim, worked in the coastal city of Gadani in Balochistan under the cover of a scrap dealer. He got prepared his fake documents and shifted from India to Chah Bahar in Iran several years ago and established his base there.
To a question regarding alleged facilitation by Iran’s spy agency to help Yadav cross into Pakistan, the ISPR DG said it has never been said that the Iranian intelligence or state was involved in his reaching Pakistan. “We can’t claim that Iran is involved. But if their soil has been used, we request them not to allow such activities in future. And they have endorsed our viewpoint and assured us that they will not let it happen again.”
The DG ISPR said Pakistan and Iran had been in contact at the level of intelligence agencies and “we have been sharing information with each other”. He said during meeting between Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, we urged Iran not to let India use its territory for subversive activities against Pakistan. Issue of fortifying Pak-Iran border was also discussed in the meeting, he added.
“This is also a violation of the UN Charter,” Bajwa said. “All possible steps should be taken to take up this issue at the international forums,” he added, throwing the ball in the court of the civilian leadership. The ISPR DG said intelligence-based operations were being conducted in several parts of the country. He said that after the Lahore blast, five operations had been carried out jointly by intelligence agencies, Pakistan Army and Rangers. “Even at this moment, operations are being carried out in and around Rawalpindi and Multan,” he said, and added, “Wherever there are terrorists, we will go behind them.” Information Minister Pervez Rashid said the arrested Indian agent will be prosecuted under the law of the land. He said Pakistan had fulfilled its responsibility by conveying Yadav’s arrest to the Indian ambassador.
